Level III is the course that qualifies you for an armed Security Officer Commission in Texas. Part 1 covers the classroom material online. Part 2 is everything that cannot be done through a screen — the physical skills and the firearms qualification, taught and assessed in person.

You must complete Level III Part 1 online before attending.

What this session covers

• Defensive tactics — awareness, barrier and counter; control holds, pressure points and takedowns
• Handcuffing — standing, kneeling and prone positions, and when restraint is appropriate
• Intermediate weapons — baton use against a combative subject, and when to stop
• Firearms handling — range safety and safe weapon manipulation
• Firearms proficiency exam — handgun, with a shotgun course of fire available as an option

Use of force

The course teaches five force options — professional presence, verbal commands, empty hand controls, hard hands and intermediate weapons, and deadly force — within the Dynamic Resistance Response Model. Your response is driven by the subject’s level of resistance, and every lower-level option stays available to you at higher levels.

Common questions about Level III Part 2

Do I have to shoot the shotgun course?
No. The handgun proficiency exam is required; the shotgun course of fire is optional.

What if I do not pass the proficiency exam?
Speak to your instructor on the day. Requalification is possible.

Can I take Part 2 before Part 1?
No. The online classroom portion has to be complete before you attend.

Does this make me a commissioned officer?
Completing the course is one requirement. You still apply to Texas DPS for the commission itself, with the usual background check.

Do I need my own firearm?
Yes — bring the handgun you intend to carry on duty. Contact us beforehand if that is a problem.
