Course details

• Format: In person, at the range — around two hours
• Who it is for: Commissioned security officers and Personal Protection Officers renewing their commission
• Prerequisite: Armed Security Recertification Part 1 completed online
• Bring:
  • The handgun you carry on duty, and duty gear
  • 50 rounds of handgun ammunition
  • A shotgun — optional, only if you want to qualify with a shotgun as well as a handgun
  • 10 rounds of 00 buck — optional, only needed for the shotgun course of fire
  • Eye and ear protection

Common questions about recertification

Can I just do the range portion?
No. Both parts are needed to satisfy the continuing education requirement for renewal.

How often do I have to requalify?
Your commission has a renewal cycle set by DPS. Requalify before it expires rather than after — a lapsed commission is harder to put right than a renewed one.

Does this cover Personal Protection Officers too?
Yes. PPOs complete the same in-person firearms qualification.

What if I fail the qualification?
Talk to your instructor on the day about requalifying.

Can I use a different handgun than last time?
Yes, but qualify with the firearm you actually intend to carry on duty.
