NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home
Carrying beyond your front door — the skills, the law and the responsibility.
The NRA’s course on carrying, storing and using a firearm for personal protection outside the home. It builds directly on Personal Protection In The Home and is delivered in two levels.
Level 1
- Length: Nine hours, several of them on the range
- Rounds fired: Approximately 100
- Covers: Carrying, storing and using a firearm safely and effectively outside the home, with live fire training and qualification
Level 2
- Length: A further five hours on the range
- Rounds fired: Approximately 115
- Covers: Advanced shooting skills
Prerequisites
You must be legally eligible to possess a firearm and of good repute, and you need the defensive pistol skills taught in Personal Protection In The Home, an understanding of the legal concepts of self-defense, and knowledge of both the general and defensive-specific gun safety rules.
Acceptable proof is an NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home certificate, or passing the pre-course evaluation.
Our policy goes further: we require our NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course and our NRA CCW Course before Personal Protection In The Home, and Personal Protection In The Home before this course.

Do I have to do Level 2?
Level 1 stands on its own. Level 2 is for those who want to push their shooting further.
Can I skip Personal Protection In The Home?
Only by passing the pre-course evaluation. The skills it teaches are assumed from the first hour.
Is this a Texas LTC course?
No. It is NRA training. The Texas License to Carry is a separate state-regulated course.
