Live-Fire Proficiency Test
Next, schedule a hands-on shooting test with a certified instructor in Round Rock or a nearby location. The state’s required course of fire adds up to 50 rounds:
- 20 rounds at 3 yards
- 20 rounds at 7 yards
- 10 rounds at 15 yards
A 70% score gets you a pass. If your first attempt doesn’t cut it, Texas allows up to three attempts to pass the written exam and the range test within any 12-month period. Also remember: your training and proficiency certificates are valid for two years, but must still be current when you actually submit your LTC application to DPS.
Certain applicants are exempt from the range portion entirely — active-duty military and veterans with a qualifying range score or firearms familiarization training in the last 10 years, state correctional officers, and county jailers who trained on the job.
Eligibility Checklist
Texas requires that applicants:
- Be 18 or older
- Have no felony convictions
- Have no Class A or B misdemeanor conviction in the past five years
- Not be subject to a protective or restraining order
- Have no active or pending criminal charges
- Not be a chemically dependent person
- Be qualified under state and federal law to possess a handgun
- Be of sound mind
- Not be finally determined delinquent on child support
