Frisco has grown fast, and a lot of the families who’ve moved here are thinking harder than ever about home and personal safety. If a Texas License to Carry (LTC) is on your list of things to get done, East Texas Security Training Academy (ETXSTA) offers a fully online course that fits into an already-busy household schedule.
What the Course Actually Covers
ETXSTA’s LTC program is split into two stages. The first is online classroom instruction, done entirely at your own pace — no set login time, no missed sessions. It covers Texas firearm laws, the legal boundaries around use of force and self-defense, how to safely handle and store a handgun, ways to de-escalate conflict before it turns violent, and how to properly interact with law enforcement while you’re carrying.
The moment you complete the classroom section, download your LTC-104 Certificate of Training instantly. That’s the official Texas Department of Public Safety document you’ll need for your license application — and it’s only good for two years, so plan your timeline accordingly.
The second stage is a shooting proficiency test conducted in person with an ETXSTA-certified instructor in Frisco or a nearby location. It’s a 50-round course of fire: 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at 15 yards, with a minimum passing score of 70%. If your first attempt doesn’t go the way you’d hoped, you get up to three tries at both the written test and the range exam within a 12-month period.
Not Everyone Has to Shoot for Their LTC
If you’re active-duty military or a veteran with a qualifying range score or documented firearms familiarization training from within the last 10 years, you’re exempt from the shooting portion. The same goes for state correctional officers and county jailers who received firearms training as part of their job — the online classroom course is all they need.
Are You Eligible?
Texas requires that LTC applicants:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have no felony conviction
- Have no Class A or Class B misdemeanor conviction within the last five years
- Not be subject to a protective or restraining order
- Have no criminal charges active or pending
- Not be a chemically dependent person
- Be of sound mind
- Be qualified under state and federal law to possess a handgun
- Not have been finally determined delinquent on child support obligations
The License Still Matters, Even With Permitless Carry
Texas allows constitutional carry, but plenty of Frisco families choose to get licensed anyway. An LTC gives you reciprocity with 37 other states, covers you in some places that permitless carry doesn’t reach, provides certain legal protections, and lets you skip the NICS background check when buying a firearm from a dealer. For a family that travels or just wants that extra layer of documentation, it’s a worthwhile step.
