How the Course Works

After finishing the classroom portion, you’ll schedule an in-person test with an ETXSTA-certified instructor in McKinney or a nearby location. You’ll fire 50 rounds total across three distances:
- 3 yards – 20 rounds
- 7 yards – 20 rounds
- 15 yards – 10 rounds
A score of 70% or better is a pass. Don’t stress if it takes a second try — applicants get up to three attempts at both the written and range exams within a 12-month period.
Eligibility: What Texas Requires
To qualify for a Texas LTC, you must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have no felony convictions
- Have no Class A or Class B misdemeanor convictions within the last five years
- Not be subject to a protective or restraining order
- Have no pending criminal charges
- Not be a chemically dependent person
- Be eligible under state and federal law to possess a handgun
- Be of sound mind
- Not be finally determined delinquent on child support
Some Applicants Skip the Range Requirement
If you’re active-duty military or a veteran with a range score or firearms familiarization training from the last 10 years, or you’re a state correctional officer or county jailer who completed firearms training on the job, you’re exempt from the live-fire test and only need to complete the online course.
Constitutional Carry Doesn’t Make the LTC Obsolete
Permitless carry covers a lot, but a Texas LTC still adds meaningful value:
