Eligibility Comes First
Before you sign up, it helps to confirm you meet the state’s requirements. To be eligible for a Texas LTC, you must:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have no felony conviction
- Have no Class A or B misdemeanor conviction in the last five years
- Not be subject to a protective or restraining order
- Have no active or pending criminal charges
- Not be a chemically dependent person
- Meet state and federal qualifications to possess a handgun
- Be of sound mind
- Not be finally determined delinquent on child support
Inside ETXSTA’s Two-Part Course
Texas requires two components before DPS will issue your license: classroom instruction and a live-fire proficiency test. ETXSTA delivers the first one entirely online.
The Online Classroom
Work through the material on your own timetable — covering Texas firearm law, use-of-force and self-defense principles, safe storage and handling, avoiding and de-escalating conflict, and how to interact with law enforcement while carrying. As soon as you finish, download your LTC-104 Certificate of Training instantly — that’s the official DPS document proving you completed this half of the requirement.
The Range Day
Once you’re done online, schedule a live-fire proficiency test with an ETXSTA-certified instructor in Lubbock or a nearby location. The state’s required course of fire is 50 rounds total:
- 20 rounds from 3 yards
- 20 rounds from 7 yards
- 10 rounds from 15 yards
You’ll need to score at least 70% to pass. If it takes more than one try, that’s fine — applicants get up to three attempts at the written exam and the range test within any 12-month period. And don’t let your paperwork lapse: training and proficiency certificates are valid for two years, but only count if they’re still valid when you actually submit your LTC application.
A handful of applicants can skip the range day: active-duty military and veterans who have a qualifying range score or firearms familiarization training from the last 10 years, state correctional officers, and county jailers who received firearms training as part of their job.
Why an LTC Still Matters in Lubbock
