NRA Personal Protection In The Home

NRA Personal Protection In The Home

Eight hours, around 100 rounds. Defending yourself and your family at home.

This NRA course covers using a firearm to defend yourself and your family in your own home — the shooting skills, the strategies, and the legal ground you are standing on.

What this course covers

  • Basic defensive shooting skills
  • Strategies for a safer home
  • Responding to a violent confrontation in the home
  • Firearms and the law
  • Selecting a handgun for self-defense
  • Continuing to develop your skills afterwards

Prerequisites

This is not a beginner’s course. We require our NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course and our NRA CCW Course before you take this one.

The NRA itself asks that you have already mastered safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing and cleaning, evidenced by any of:

  • An NRA Basic Pistol certificate
  • An NRA FIRST Steps certificate
  • A pistol competitive shooting card
  • A DD 214 showing pistol qualification
  • Passing the Pre-Course Assessment

Our own requirement is the stricter of the two: Basic Pistol and CCW, both with us, before you book. If you are unsure where you stand, talk to us first.

What you receive

  • The NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook
  • The NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure
  • The Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet
  • A course completion certificate

Course details

  • Format: Classroom and live fire on the range
  • Length: Eight hours
  • Rounds fired: Approximately 100

Price: $200

Common questions

Why the prerequisite?
The course spends its time on defensive skill, not on teaching you to shoot. You need the basics already in place — which is why we ask for Basic Pistol and CCW first.

Does this lead anywhere?
Yes. The certificate is the prerequisite for Personal Protection Outside The Home.

How much ammunition should I bring?
Plan for about 100 rounds, plus spare.
