Texas DPS requires every License to Carry applicant to demonstrate handgun proficiency in person. The written and classroom portion can be completed online, but the shooting qualification cannot — it has to be done on a range, in front of a certified instructor, who then verifies your proficiency for your application.

This session covers exactly that. You shoot the required course of fire, we score it, and you leave with the range portion behind you.

The course of fire

Fifty rounds total, shot on a standard B-27 silhouette target (24″ x 45″). Every string starts from the low-ready position — there is no drawing from a holster during qualification.

3-yard line — 20 rounds

• 1 shot in 2 seconds, five times (5 rounds)
• 2 shots in 3 seconds, five times (10 rounds)
• 5 shots in 10 seconds, once (5 rounds)

7-yard line — 20 rounds

• 5 shots in 10 seconds, once (5 rounds)
• 2 shots in 4 seconds, five times (10 rounds)
• 1 shot in 3 seconds, five times (5 rounds)

15-yard line — 10 rounds

• 2 shots in 6 seconds, once (2 rounds)
• 3 shots in 9 seconds, once (3 rounds)
• 5 shots in 15 seconds, once (5 rounds)

How it is scored

Each round is worth up to five points, for a maximum of 250.

• 5 points — inside the 8, 9, 10 or X rings
• 4 points — inside the 7 ring
• 3 points — on the silhouette, outside the 7 ring
• 0 points — off the silhouette, or outside the time limit

You need 175 points out of 250 to pass — 70%. Shots fired after the buzzer score zero, so pace matters as much as accuracy.

What to bring

• A semi-automatic handgun or revolver, .22 caliber or larger
• At least 50 rounds of factory ammunition
• Eye and ear protection — mandatory, no exceptions

Bring a few extra rounds if you have them. Ammunition that fails to feed still costs you time.

• Prerequisite: None to attend, though most students take this after finishing the online LTC classroom portion

Who is exempt from the shooting portion

Some applicants do not have to shoot the qualification:

• Active-duty military
• Veterans with a range score or proof of firearms familiarization training dated within the past 10 years
• State correctional officers
• County jailers who completed firearms training as part of their employment

Common questions about the shooting qualification

Do I have to take the classroom part with you too?
No. If you completed the classroom portion elsewhere, you are welcome to shoot with us.

What happens if I do not pass?
You can requalify. Talk to the instructor on the day — most students who fall short are losing points to the clock rather than to accuracy, and that is fixable.

Can I borrow a handgun?
Contact us before your session. Do not assume one will be available on the day.

What caliber should I shoot?
Anything .22 or larger qualifies. Shoot what you are comfortable and accurate with — there is no advantage to a larger caliber here.

How long does it take?
Plan for about an hour on the range, including the safety briefing and scoring.
